The train company running has gone bankrupt in the pandemic. There are no plans to open the line soon again. Very disappointing. But Alausi is still a friendly little town if you like meeting the loc… Full review by RobertvG1988

As of Ocotober 2022 the train still is not running again. We took the hike instead which offered stunning views into three canyons and down on the rail trecks. Alausi is a cool place, too. Definitely… Full review by SquirrelExplorer

Just did it two days ago. We booked the single-row seats and were on the wrong side, but there was not much people so it's easy to look on the other side. At the bottom (half-way) we asked the staff to change wagon and we did without problem. The thing is you can't predict which side you'll be upfront apparently, so the best is to book the wagon with the less people in case you need to swap, but overall it doesn't matter much.

Yes you can, the buses are frequent. We took a bus to Alausi from Guayaquil and stayed just one night in Alausi as apart from the train ride there is nothing much to do or see. We then took a way ticket to Riobambo it’s all very easy.
