Toxic smoke and dangerous particulate pollution are spreading far beyond the flames, leaving air quality at unhealthy levels in multiple counties.

Even with thick smoke coming from the Hughes Fire, skies have been clear in many areas, and the air quality forecast has been good. But that doesn't tell the whole story.

The Air Quality Index measured 156 near Forks, Washington, and received a rating of "unhealthy," meaning some members of the general public may experience health effects and members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects. No major wildfires were reported nearby, however.
