Two undersea telecommunications cables that were damaged in the Baltic Sea on Dec. 25 appeared to have been torn apart by a strong external force, Finland's Elisa said on Monday, adding that they had now been repaired.

Finnish authorities have found and retrieved the anchor of the Eagle S tanker, suspected of damaging cables in the Baltic Sea. Investigators will begin inspecting it on Tuesday. Finnish radio Yle reported that the tanker Eagle S's anchor was located at the bottom of the Gulf of Finland and brought to the surface.

Elisa has announced that it is experiencing faults with submarine cable connections between Finland and Estonia in the Gulf of Finland. Faults were detected on Wednesday evening (25th Dec) in two submarine cables owned by Elisa. Elisa has contacted the Finnish and Estonian authorities, who are investigating the matter.

Finnish police said on Tuesday they had recovered a lost anchor from the seabed as part of an investigation of suspected sabotage against power and internet cables in the Baltic Sea.

The cause of the cable damage was uncertain. Telecom operators said on Boxing Day that the incident had not impacted consumers so far.

Finland's public transport agency said on Wednesday that an oil tanker suspected of damaging undersea cables in the Baltic Sea has been found to have serious deficiencies and will not be allowed to operate until repairs have been made.

The Eagle S, thought to be part of Russia’s “shadow fleet,” was detained in December following suspected sabotage.
