Emergency evacuation alerts have gone off the rails, pinging people seemingly at random. Experts say that such errors can sow mistrust in the alert system, potentially endangering residents down the line.

"It’s hard to see, because there’s so much pain and suffering,” said one local, who dropped off toys at the Westwood Recreation Center in West Los Angeles.

An alert designated to warn people of a fire northwest of downtown Los Angeles went sent county-wide, according to a local official. At the time, emergency management was monitoring the Kenneth Fire which triggered its own evacuations.

A wireless emergency evacuation alert was sent to residents across Los Angeles County on Thursday afternoon. However, it was meant for people in the order and warning zones for the Kenneth Fire in Woodland Hills.

Beverley Hills residents received “another evacuation alert from the LA County Fire Department” but officials “confirmed this was another error."

Emergency managers in Los Angeles apologized Friday after false evacuation alerts sparked panic in a city on edge over an unprecedented wildfire disaster.

The Los Angeles City Emergency Management Department said an emergency alert to phones warning residents of possible evacuations was sent to the entire county by mistake, adding evacuation orders have not changed.
