Jimmy Carter, the former U.S. president who struggled with a bad economy and a hostage crisis but went on to a long and admired post-White House career, will be honored at a state funeral in Washington on Thursday.

Thursday's service will cap off six days of remembrance for Carter, who died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100. After the funeral, Carter will return to Georgia to be buried in his hometown of Plains, next to his beloved wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter.

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, will be eulogized at a state funeral Thursday at the National Cathedral and later by private family services and interment in Plains, Georgia.

Funeral services honoring former President Jimmy Carter started on Saturday morning in Carter’s home state of Georgia, and will conclude today at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

Jimmy Carter, who considered himself an outsider even as he sat in the Oval Office as the 39th U.S. president, will be honored Thursday with the pageantry of a funeral at Washington National Cathedral before a second service and burial in his tiny Georgia hometown.

Mourners have been flowing into the Capitol to pay their respects to former President Jimmy Carter. On Thursday, the site of Carter’s funeral will change from the Rotunda to Washington’s National Cathedral.

During his time as Georgia’s 76th governor, Carter made preservation a priority. He consolidated 38 agencies to create the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and quickly got to work preserving the state's natural wonders.
