Sudan’s army is edging closer to recapturing the country’s capital Khartoum in what allies of its leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said would be their most significant victory in two years of brutal civil war.

A lightning offensive has reversed months of setbacks for the government, while rebel discipline shows signs of fraying after nearly two years of civil war.

Sudan's army and its allies say that they are close to regaining full control of Khartoum, recording the most significant victory by far over the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since their war began nearly two years ago.

The army has been jubilantly welcomed by many inhabitants of the areas it has recently recaptured, as the RSF has been widely accused of killing and raping civilians in Khartoum, as well as looting the homes of the many residents who have fled the city.
