Claude Giroux broke a third-period tie and added an assist, rookie Leevi Merilainen made 34 saves and the Ottawa Senators beat Utah 3-1 on Sunday night.
Utah generates more five-on-five offence than Ottawa (most teams do) and Ottawa does a better job suppressing five-on-five expected goals. Both teams have pretty forgettable special teams and I found it surprising that Utah takes more penalties than Ottawa (both teams draw similar amounts of penalty minutes).
After the rosters for the 4 Nations Face-Off were announced, it was expected that Clayton Keller’s name would be on the list. However, the Utah Hockey Club captain’s omission from Team USA was a surprise throughout the league and maybe for himself too.
Three goals ended Utah’s three-game winning streak. Cole Perfetti scored his first NHL hat trick, including the go-ahead goal, for the Winnipeg Jets in a 5-2 win
While Utah kept finding ways to respond to Winnipeg's goals, a turnover by Michael Kesselring gave Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers a breakaway goal and a 4-2 lead that Utah couldn't cut into.
Cole Perfetti scored three goals for his first NHL hat trick and the Winnipeg Jets beat the Utah Hockey Club 5-2.
Perfetti put the Jets in front 1-0 with a power-play goal at 17:52 of the first period. Ehlers set it up on the rush with a cross-ice feed to Perfetti for a one-timer from low in the right face-off circle.
Utah entered Minnesota with plenty of momentum after playing a complete game in its 5-2 win over Winnipeg. Scoring a goal in just 1:46, Utah came out fast and never looked back.
