Wall Street is pointing slightly lower in early trading but is on track to close the week with solid gains on healthy quarterly earnings reports from large U.S. corporations.

Japan’s core inflation rate rose to a 16-month high at 3% in December, year on year, boosting the case for a rate hike from the Bank of Japan.

Shares were mixed in thin Asian trading on Monday after U.S. stocks edged back from their all-time high. Oil prices fell and U.S. futures sank, while Chinese shares shed some of their early gains after a survey of manufacturers showed export orders dropping to a five-month low.

U.S. stocks rose to a record as Wall Street regained some of the momentum that catapulted it to 57 all-time highs last year. The S&P 500 rose 0.5% Thursday amid relatively quiet trading and surpassed the record it set early last month.

NEW YORK — U.S. stocks pulled back from their all-time high on Friday as they closed out a second straight winning week . The S&P 500 slipped 0.3% a day after setting a record. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 140 points, or 0.3%, and the Nasdaq composite sank 0.5%.

SLB helped lead the market after the provider oilfield services delivered bigger profit and revenues for the end of 2024 than analysts expected. It jumped 6.1% after it also raised its dividend by 3.6% and said it’s returning $2.3 billion to its investors by buying back its own stock.
