The Waldorf-Astoria has welcomed its first residents after delays since work began in 2017. The conversion includes 375 hotel rooms and 375 condos, with some condos already sold. For the last half-decade, anyone roaming the halls of the Waldorf-Astoria claiming to be a resident was more likely to be a ghost of the past than a paying tenant.
Waldorf Astoria closes on first sales after renovation
The Waldorf Astoria is finally getting the first of its new residents, a decade after a Chinese firm bought the iconic Midtown hotel. As part of a major renovation, a portion of the property was converted into 375 condos on top of a hotel. Closings for the condos began in December, with at least $7 million of sales hitting public records.
Waldorf Astoria's First Condo Sales Close As Long-Delayed Reopening Approaches
The hotel originally opened in 1931 and became a hub for dignitaries and socialites. In 2015, Anbang Insurance Group bought the hotel from Hilton Worldwide Holdings for $1.95B with plans to restore the art deco building to its historic grandeur. The sale was the priciest single-asset hotel purchase in U.S. history.
