Arctic blast quickly transformed Lake Michigan into icy wonderland
MUSKEGON, MI— Lake Michigan was blasted with sub-zero Arctic air last week, causing the Lakeshore to rapidly transform into an icy wonderland. Ice cover expanded rapidly last week, reaching a short-term peak of 21 percent ice cover last Wednesday.

The mid-January Arctic blast brought frigid temperatures, helping to firm up a good quantity of ice on Lake Michigan. The dangers of shelf ice on Lake Michigan
The biggest danger with shelf ice is how unstable it is. Shelf ice can collapse from a person walking on it, and this is especially true with the above freezing temperatures we’ve had lately. There could also be holes in the ice that you may not see if snow is covering them.

Arctic Blast: Michiganders brave the frigid cold and snow
GRAND RAPIDS, MI--Michiganders are experiencing some of the coldest temperatures since the 2019 Polar Vortex this week. Most of Michigan is experiencing wind chill temperatures in the -10 to -25 degree range on Monday and Tuesday. In the western Upper Peninsula, a wind chill of 50 below zero was recorded.
Arctic blast, heavy lake-effect snow begins Sunday
Paired with the Arctic air comes robust lake-effect snow beginning on Sunday. While the snow will initially target lakeshore counties, wind will eventually blow snow much further inland. Cold will be intense enough to make salt much less effective on the roads.
