Awarded in response to historic flooding in 2023, funds will be used to repair or replace failing alley sewer lines, a major cause of basement backups.

Some major assistance from the federal government will soon help the city of Detroit address some infrastructure problems and much needed repairs to its old sewer lines.

Nearly $350 million in federal funding will help Detroit residents and businesses be better prepared for future flooding events. On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) presented the city of Detroit with a check for $346.

City leaders formally accepted $346 million in funding and began detailing how they plan to spend the money to repair infrastructure ahead of future weather events on Wednesday.

"We’ve got a sewer system built to handle 4 inches of rain in a 24-hour period, which was great for the 20th Century," said Mayor Mike Duggan.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded Detroit and surrounding communities funding through its community block grant program for disaster recovery.

The funding comes through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and allocates $244 million for Cook County, $96 million for suburban Cicero and $89 million for downstate St. Clair County.
