ATI's R700 GPU uses the TeraScale architecture and is made using a 55 nm production process at TSMC. With a die size of 256 mm² and a transistor count of 956 million it is a medium-sized chip. R700 supports DirectX 10.1 (Feature Level 10_1).

Dual GPU products using two RV770 GPUs, codenamed R700, were also announced. One product named Radeon HD 4870 X2, featuring 2×1GB GDDR5 memory, was released on August 12, 2008, while another dual-GPU product, the Radeon HD 4850 X2, with GDDR3 memory and lower clock speeds, is also available.

The R100 cards were originally launched without any numbering as Radeon SDR, DDR, LE and VE; these products were later "rebranded" to their names within the numbered naming scheme, when the Radeon 8000 series was introduced.
