The Congaree River is a short but wide river in South Carolina in the United States; It flows for approximately 53 miles (85 km). The river serves an important role as the final outlet channel for the entire Lower Saluda and Lower Broad watersheds, before merging with the Wateree River just north of Lake Marion to form the Santee River .

On the Richland County side of the Congaree River, 95% of existing land use is rural in nature with the remainder being suburban. The Congaree River watershed is contained within Richland County’s Southeast Planning Area.

Watershed 03050110-03 is located in Richland, Lexington, and Calhoun Counties and consists primarily of the Congaree River and its tributaries from its origin to Cedar Creek. The watershed occupies 232,276 acres of the Sandhills and Upper Coastal Plain regions of South Carolina.

Cleaning up the TLM in the Congaree River is difficult because of several unique complexities which limit the options and techniques available. First, this portion of the river is underlain by granite bedrock with only a few feet of sandy sediment which eliminates the ability to place a piling wall as a barrier.
