The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) is Malta’s military organisation tasked with primary defence functions and safeguarding national sovereignty and interest, both in peacetime and in crisis.

The Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) consists of a Force Headquarters and five separate units – three land units, an air wing and a maritime squadron. The AFM also has a Volunteer Reserve Force. Command, Control & Administration. The ‘Malta Armed Forces Act’ was passed through Parliament in 1970.

1965 – The Malta Land Force (MLF) was formed. 1970 – Royal Malta Artillery was transferred to the Malta Land Force (MLF) and fell under the responsibility of the Government of Malta. 1973 – Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) .

Since the earliest times, successive rulers of Malta relied mainly on the local fighting men for the protection of the Maltese Islands. In an emergency, the Islanders were often rallied for the defence of their homeland.

The AFM performs two main defence roles designated as ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ defence roles. Primary Defence Roles: Maintain territorial integrity (particularly at the Malta International Airport and other sensitive locations).

Located in the Military Zone (Apron 7) at Malta International Airport, the AFM’s Air Wing, MQR is the aerial component of the Force. The Wing lends itself to all deployments of air assets in various roles and missions in order to maintain the territorial integrity of the Maltese Islands.

Military Rank is a system of hierarchical relationships in the Armed Forces of Malta organized along military lines. The uniforms denote the bearer’s rank with particular insignia affixed to the uniforms.

As one of the national instruments of Government, the AFM is predominantly engaged in military and wider security operations in order to safeguard Malta’s territorial integrity. It has also been entrusted to act in support of the foreign and security policies of the Government of Malta, by deploying military forces
